Sweet Oblivion and Sweet Escape

We were given the great honor of being able to share with all of you the awesome new cover for Sweet Oblivion and the never before seen cover of book 2 Sweet Escape.
-About the Authors-

Bailey Ardisone is a collaboration between two sisters who were born and raised outside of Chicago, Illinois. They combined their creative forces to write the first book in their series, called Sweet Oblivion. Though the name Bailey Ardisone applies to both of them, for the sake of answering questions they will each take on one of the names to make things easier.

The older sister of the two in Bailey Ardisone, has always loved getting lost in books, movies, music, and art. Fantasy is her favorite genre. She gets her love of words from their grandmother who together used to write poems, short stories and even greeting cards. Her biggest goal would be to travel and explore the world. She loves going to the beach, enjoys football sundays, and spending time with friends and family.

The younger sister of the two in Bailey Ardisone, has always held a strong love for anything art related. Whether it be drawing, music, or constantly day-dreaming, her mind never stops imagining wonderful stories and possibilities. She finally got to put some of those ideas to use with her new found love of writing novels. Some other things she is forever obsessed with are Japanese Anime and Manga, animals, traveling, her home city of Chicago and anything in miniature form. One thing she can never get enough of is sleeping/taking naps and sour skittles.

-Excerpt-

~Nari~

I suddenly felt anxious, excited even, at the prospect of laying eyes on Mycah again. On being enveloped in his woodsy scent. The way my soul felt complete and whole again only his presence alone could accomplish. ...Were we really just friends?
And then there he was.
As I took the last stair, his eyes found mine from the "Greeting Room" he quietly sat in, drinking from an antique teacup.
He watched me carefully as he slowly put the cup to his alluring lips and took a sip. My heart danced wildly in my chest with every step I took, drawing closer and closer.
I waved at him, not able to speak just yet.
“Morning, beautiful,” he whispered. His English accent made the words sound musical. Or maybe it was his silky voice that did it. Or it could have been the combination of the two, I really didn’t know. Either way, my stomach did a flip.
And then I thought, it must have been the way he was looking at me, not even trying to hide the desire that flooded his aqua eyes as soon as they locked onto mine.
The sun played with his eyes, bringing out the unique colors and making them more vivid. Even though he was lit up by the streaming sun that shone brightly through the large bay window, he never looked more dangerous.
And he never looked more sexy.
Well, that could be debatable.
I mean, if you wanted to count the time he was dripping wet and practically naked, well then, one really couldn’t say.
But this moment was definitely a top contender for first place.

He stood up, keeping perfect posture and foreign demeanor exquisitely intact, and came over to me.
“You alright?” he asked, lips pulling up in a side smile. I nodded, half hating the spell he always put me under, half totally loving it.

He reached out and slowly slid his hand into mine, intertwining our fingers together and pulling me toward the front door. He chuckled and slightly shook his head at the ground.

This time, it isn't because of who Mycah is.
This time, it's because of who she is.
~
Naminé risked everything to save her people. Her goal was to bring their only hope back to their Kingdom. Forced to do his bidding, can she prevent the downfall of the only hope she worked so hard to bring home?

...Can any of them Escape?

-Excerpt-

~Nari~

I laid mesmerized from the position on my back, staring up at the cloudless sky. It was as blue as a Robin’s egg. If not more blue. The sun shown extremely bright, but the rays did not scorch my skin. The air was comfortable. Very comfortable. It was the perfect temperature. Warm, without being too warm, and no humidity.
I did not move.
I was afraid to move in case this was all just a dream, and any slight stir would make it vanish, throwing me back into tormented reality. It must be a dream, right? Clearly, I had busted my head against the tree trunk and knocked myself out...And I was only imagining this while Zaylie, I was sure, was worried and trying to wake me up.
Right?
I could feel the grass beneath me. Soft, lush, exquisite. As if I laid against the perfect bed made just for me. I was Goldilocks and it was just right.
A colorful bird soared above me. But as it descended closer, obscuring my view of the sky, I realized it was not actually a bird at all. It was the strangest butterfly I had ever seen. Its wings were a rainbow of colors - and it was huge. Bird-like huge.
But I didn’t feel frightened or grossed out like I usually did by insects. This was different. It felt different here. The butterfly flapped its wings so gently and effortlessly. I numbly reached up while it landed weightlessly on my fingers.

The moment it touched me and started cleaning its antennae, even though I could barely feel it on me, I got the striking feeling that this was real. Very real. I quickly sat up, causing the vivid butterfly to take flight again, and gazed around the beauteous expanse encircling me.

YA Crush Tourney!!!!

YACrush Banner

Micah is up in the very first round of voting - click here to go vote for him - and I've even included the post that is being shared over there. BUT - and they can't share it there, IF our boy makes it to the next round there is a giveaway! He has graciously offered to sign some swag and give a winner $10 to either Barnes & Noble or Amazon. All you have to do? Share the word about the tourney! (The giveaway is international!) We only have 24 hours to get as many votes as we can - so share share share! The Rafflecopter is at the bottom of the post - pre-made tweets and links making it easy peasy for you.

And now ... THE POST!

There it is. At last. The rumble of a motorcycle out front. My heart stops for a few beats. I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for this moment – the moment when I finally get to meet the love of my life, the star of my dreams, my fictional fantasy come to life.

photo

“It’s Micah, and he’s on a black classic Triumph. His golden hair is windblown and tangled. He looks glorious in the sunlight…And I know that his smile is meant for me.”
Micah Condie is 6’2” of blonde hair, blue-eyed sexiness. A devoted brother, loyal friend and loving boyfriend, he has the biggest heart of any YA crush I’ve ever read. He isn’t afraid of his feelings, and he will do whatever it takes to protect the people he cares for. The only thing not perfect about him is that he isn’t real, and I can’t tackle hug him and swoon over him in person!

But there is more to Micah than heart and looks. You see, Micah is a demon – as in literal, fire-and-brimstone, demon from hell. To survive, he must take souls, and if he doesn’t, he will die. It’s a horrible choice, and it would be so easy for Micah to just give up and be the monster everyone claims he is.
image
“You can’t reduce me down to that, like I’m some sort of wild animal that only acts on instinct. I made a decision to be with Hope. And she made the same decision to be with me.”
Micah doesn’t believe in taking the easy way out. He refuses to accept that he is somehow “destined” to be a bad guy because he was unlucky enough to be born a demon. So instead, he fights. Every day he wages a war with the darkness, battling his own nature for the right to create his own destiny and be with the girl he loves.
“I’ll choose you. I’ll always choose you.”

Micah is the ultimate good bad boy. Yes, he has blackness inside of him, but he won’t yield to it, no matter what. And isn’t that what we all do? We all have our dark sides, and we all strive to be the best person we can be. Micah reminds me of that, and when he wins the fight, it’s like I’m winning too. That’s why I choose him as my YA Crush. Because he is the most real, the most human. Demon darkness and all.

“I’m fine,” she says, a small smile playing on her face.

"Convince me,” I say.
She slides her hands up my chest, around my neck. Her eyes
don’t leave mine, the uncertainty of the moment gone for both of us.
We step toward each other at the same time, my arms drawing
her even closer at the moment our lips meet. Her mouth opens, lips meld with
mine in total perfection, and I take in her breath as my own. I run my hands
down to the small of her back, and she knots her fingers in my hair and curves
into me. The slight movement of her body pressing against me stirs up an
entirely different sort of hunger.
Nothing matters except for her.
Nothing.
A small sound escapes from her throat, and my need ignites
like flames against all of the darkness.
Way too soon, the bell rings, totally killing the moment.
Doors burst open, and the hallway overflows with people and commotion.
“There you are! I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” a
voice says.
I groan and press my forehead to Hope’s for just a second
before breaking away from her.
“Hey, Sylvia,” she says brightly, linking her fingers with
mine. She squeezes my hand before letting go and turns her face up to mine. “See
you later.”
Her cheeks are flushed, her lips parted. I let out my breath
slowly.
“See ya.”
I drag a hand over my face as I watch her leave, the urge to
chase her growing exponentially with each step she takes away from me. It’s not
just some stupid possessive needy thing. I know she’s mine as much as she knows
I’m hers.
But the second she disappears around the corner, the feeling
resurfaces. The one that will always stick with me. The one when I thought she
was leaving me for good, right after she saved my life last semester. That
moment when I was full of regret that I let her down.
Ok folks - now that you have read that you know you want Micah to win right?! So go vote here and help spread the word. The rafflecopter makes it easy to share links and such. Remember - a winner will only be chosen if he makes it to the next round! AND IT'S INTERNATIONAL. Go go go!

Some secrets are best kept in Oblivion.

Deleted Scene!

****
This deleted scene takes place after Nari gets home from her first day of her senior year in high school. Her foster father, Ray, came home drunk and threw his empty bottle against the wall like he usually does. She walks in to the house and talks about the start of it becoming her chore to clean it up.

***Deleted Scene***

The day after I lost Teddy, I had been crying on my bed, thinking only of one thing: how could he have taken Teddy? My only friend. I felt lost, alone. I cried thinking that I had failed my best friend because I couldn’t save him. It was my duty to protect him and I had failed. The thought made me miserable.

I had been crying so hard I felt parched and it was hard to swallow. I tried to dry my face and make it look like I hadn’t been crying. I opened my bedroom door and snuck out in the hall. I bravely started out toward the kitchen to get a drink of water.

I barely made it halfway down the hallway when I was struck with pain. I stifled a gasp and held my hand over my mouth. I looked down at my bare feet and saw the blood running over my toes. I looked more closely and realized I had stepped on a piece of glass. Glass from the bottle that had been thrown against the wall in the hallway the day he took Teddy.

I tried not to make a sound as I tiptoed slowly to the bathroom. I kept my hand over my mouth so that I didn’t make a sound with my mouth, desperate to hold back tears, but it was so painful.

Just as I was hoping he wouldn’t hear me, I heard him pause the TV, get off the couch, and head my way. I let out a gasp when he suddenly peered his head around the corner.

“What do you think you're doing?” he said as I met his eyes. I tried to turn away so that he didn’t see the tears running down my cheeks. The pain was bad, and I couldn’t help but let the tears fall.

“I didn't say you could come out. Get back in there,” he snarled.

I hung my head so that my long chocolate brown hair fell into my face and covered my eyes.

“Stop crying like a baby,” he ordered, then shook his head snickering as if he was enjoying my pain and reveled in seeing me suffer. “If you had cleaned up this mess, you wouldn’t have stepped in glass in the first place, stupid.”

I made the mistake of lifting my head and meeting his eyes. I instantly saw a look of disgust on his face as he said, “Don’t look at me with those freaky eyes. They’re just as ugly as your name. N a r i e l l a, he slowly grunted with a drunken slur. “What kind of stupid name is that?”

I could smell the alcohol on him as he talked. I ignored his remarks about my eyes and my name. It was nothing he hadn’t said to my face before.

He was suddenly gone. I listened to him thump back on the couch and switch channels on the TV.

I wiped the hair out of my face, the tears out of my freaky eyes, and cleaned the mess.

And that was how it happened. Ever since that day, I was the one that cleaned up after his mess. All of them. I was the one that would sweep the thousands of pieces of glass that had shattered all over the floor. It was now my chore.

The corner of the living room near the door to the kitchen- that was his spot to throw all his bottles.

I had cut myself several times since that day. Stepping on pieces that I had missed. It didn't take me long to learn to always wear shoes in the house.

After I cleaned the mess and dumped the glass in the trash, I ran to my room. I grabbed my cell phone and backpack, and headed out the door.Finally.

Pathogen: Patient Zero by Kai Kiriyama Blog Tour!

For our stop on Kai Kiriyama's blog tour, we had the chance to interview her!

Hi ladies! Thank you for hosting me on the tour! I'm super excited to be here and am truly honoured to be included as a stop on your most awesome blog.

1. How does it feel to be releasing your second book?

If I can be honest, it's just as nerve wracking and nervous as it was to be releasing my first book! I'm sitting here feeling like, yes, I've done this already once before but at the same time I'm still sweating bullets and am really afraid that no one is gonna like it. Ha ha. It's like stepping out of your parent's house for the first time or something, the first day of a new school. You dunno if anyone is gonna like you or if you're gonna like anyone. It's exciting and scary all at the same time. I feel like it's the worst kind of stage fright; and I've been performing on stage for almost as long as I've been writing. It's a feeling that I would never EVER trade for anything.

2. Why zombies?

Why not zombies? I love zombies. Walking Dead is my favourite television show (second maybe only to Doctor Who, and Supernatural) and zombies are kind of a big deal right now. Everyone (well, almost everyone) loves zombies. It's one of those things where you can start a discussion with almost anyone about what they would do if the dead started to rise right now. It's a culture of inclusion, y'know? Everyone has a zombie apocalypse survival scenario, everyone has a zombie plan, and if they don't, usually you can get them to make one up.

3. Can you tell us a little bit more about the main character?

The main character in this book, Zero, is a girl who just wanted to help. She went about her life kind of rebelling against the general money-loving, consumerist way that she was raised by helping others, by not being greedy. It wasn't meant to be a statement on anything either. She's just a good person who ended up getting more then she was expecting.

4. Who inspired you to start writing?

That's a really tough question. I've always read books. It's always been my favourite hobby. In grade school, I used to write well above and beyond what the writing assignments were. I would come back with a duotang filled with 20+ handwritten pages of whatever story assignment we were given. It really just seemed like a natural step for me and I started writing with the intention of making it my career at age 13. If I had to narrow it down, I guess Joss Whedon was a major influence, along with almost every writer who has ever crossed my path in book form.

5. What type of music do you listen to while writing?

That really depends. Pathogen: Patient Zero was written mostly in silence. Blaze Tuesday was written to classic music, Irish Punk and heavy metal, along with long periods of silence. I've got a pile of movie soundtracks that I listen to as well. The novel I've been writing during Camp NaNo this year has mostly been written to the band Korpiklaani. It really depends on what kind of mood I'm in and if I can think of anything that will help set the tone.

6. Are your books more YA or Mature audiences?

Patient Zero can go both ways, since Zero is like 18 or 19 in the story. I typically don't write anything that I would consider YA, however. Blaze Tuesday is definitely not YA, and the novel I'm working on right now is a mature fantasy, although, "mature" might not be the right word to describe it. When I set out to write something, I don't usually consider what kind of audience I'm aiming for. I feel that the story will determine what the audience will be when it's finished.

7. Do you feel supported by your peers?

I have to say that I do! I have built up the best circle of friends that I have ever had through the power of social media. Through Twitter, I have met so many wonderful authors who are just so supportive and fun to chat with. (You guys included!) I've even spearheaded an open blog community called the Samurai Scribes (samuraiscribes.wordpress.com) and we all strive to support each other and offer insights and pep talks to other writers and authors working through various stages of publication. I'm always happy to meet other writers and talk with them and make new friends.

8. What year does this book take place?

Pathogen: Patient Zero doesn't take place in any specified year. I did it intentionally. I wanted it to feel like this could be happening yesterday, or six months from now, or five years from now. I wanted it to feel current without being too dated. I mean, in 20 years this'll obviously sound like it was written in 2012, but for now, I wanted it to sound like it could be happening anywhere, to anyone right now.

9. How many books are you hoping to publish in your lifetime?

Uh... I hadn't really thought about about that. Ha ha. Let's just say that I hope to publish all of the stories that are floating around in my brain before I die, and that there are a LOT of stories in my brain. Blaze Tuesday alone has at least 8 books, plus I'm working on television scripts for him. Pathogen has 3 books, the novel I'm writing currently is part one of a trilogy as well. "Lots" seems to be a vague enough answer!

10. Which story do you like writing more? This one (Pathogen: Patient Zero) or Blaze Tuesday (and the Case of the Knight Surgeon)?

That's a mighty loaded question! Both of these books are completely different. You can't really compare the two. Patient Zero was very hard to write. I cried, a lot. I broke my own heat and felt really guilty about torturing my characters the way I did. I love the concept and I love the seris that has been born from Zero's suffering, though. I'm very proud of it. Blaze Tuesday is a fun romp through a futuristic city and I get to torture my characters in completely different ways. If I had to choose, I wouldn't write Patient Zero over again, though. So I guess I enjoyed writing Blaze more?

Thank you again for having me here, it's been awesome to answer your questions. Leave a comment and I'll answer more questions and every comment will enter you guys in a chance to win a prize pack! Thanks again, I really hope that you all enjoy Patient Zero as much as I enjoyed getting it ready for you.

Fire Spirits Series (Books 1-3)
Smokeless Fire blurb:
For the last two years Ari Johnson's life has been anything but normal, and on her 18th birthday, when her friends surprise her with a gimmick genie claiming to grant wishes, Ari discovers the truth. The tragic and strange occurrences surrounding her 16th birthday were not coincidental and her life is never going to be the same again.  Ari's real parents are not normal.  They are not loving.  They are not human. They are myth. They are Smokeless Fire. They are Jinn.

Scorched Skies blurb:
The White King has crossed the line, sounded the horn, sent out the wolves.
When blood is shed and life is lost the reality of Ari’s position as both hunter and prey finally sets in. It seems her father will stop at nothing to force her will to his own and distracted by Charlie’s latest mistake and her seemingly misguided attraction to Jai, Ari never thought to fear anyone else but the Jinn King.
Blindsided and attacked, Ari learns a new wolf has joined the hunt. A dark sorcerer believes he knows a way to bleed the power of the Seal and wield it as his own, and he is even less patient than The White King. The War for the Seal has only just begun… and it’s time for Ari to turn it on its head. It’s time for Ari to stop acting like the hunted.
It’s time for Ari to become the hunter.

Borrowed Ember Blurb:
Everything in Ari’s life until this point has been borrowed.
Her human life with a man who wasn't her real father.
A love for a boy who needed more than her to be strong.

Kisses with a Jinn who refused to do anything but lend them out in moments of weakness. And even her resolve, which seemed to fail her whenever she needed it most.
But Ari is done borrowing. She finally feels strong enough to make hunting Jinn not just a hobby to get her through her dismal situation, but to make hunting a permanent and necessary career.  Her friendship with Charlie might finally make it onto real and steady ground if only she can save him from the trial on Mount Qaf. And her love for Jai could be eternal, if only she could gain control over the darkness of the Seal within her.
Ari believes all of this is doable. That finally she will truly own the relationships in her life and to a certain extent have ownership over her future.
But none of that matters when it isn't up to her……For high in the emerald mountains of Mount Qaf, the Sultan Azazil has been keeping secrets. Even from the Jinn Kings. Secrets that will change everything… and bring Ari to the crashing realization that once again…… she’s borrowed something that will never truly belong to her. Something that is desperate to be unleashed. Something that could destroy them all.

Mythology By Helen Boswell Interview + Epic Giveaway!!!

Blurb:
Hope Gentry doesn’t believe in Fate. Born with an unusual power to see the dark memories of those around her, Hope just wants to be a normal teenager. But on the first day of her senior year of high school, she finds herself irresistibly drawn to a transfer student named Micah Condie. At first glance, Micah seems like a boy that most girls would dream about. But when Hope's powers allow her to discover Micah's darkest secret, she quickly becomes entangled in the lives of mythical entities she never dreamed existed. Was this her destiny all along? And will her powers help her survive the evil of the Demon Impiorum?

Mythology isn’t just for English class anymore

Excerpt 1:

Micah’s waiting for me in my bedroom. It was an innocent enough invitation to show him my photographs, but I wonder if my true intentions had been just as innocent. I take an insanely long time to brush out my hair.
When I finally enter my room, Micah’s examining the framed prints on the wall.
“These aren’t yours,” he says without turning around.
I move to stand next to him. “I know. Mine are in a portfolio.”
He looks at me. “Why in a portfolio? Why not hang your own work?”
I think about it for a second. “Maybe because what I photograph represents what I see all the time. It’s nice to look at what someone else sees for a change.”
He smiles and reaches for my hand, and I get that melty feeling again when he laces his fingers through mine. But now he’s looking past me and frowning. I turn my head and see the stack of books on my desk. The picture of Brian Halverson from the back of Man and Mythology is face-up on top of the stack.
“Micah, what is it?”
He lets go of my hand and sinks to sit on the edge of my bed. His head rests on his hands like he has another headache. “He gave me another warning today.”
“What? What did he say to you?” I can feel my anger building.
He raises his head and reaches out to touch my arm. “Please don’t get upset. He was different with me this time. He told me that he could see that I care about you, but that if I do, then I should keep away before you wind up getting hurt. Maybe you’re right. Maybe he knows what I did to my mom. It’s the only thing I can think of that makes sense.”
He looks across the room at the door. He whispers, “I should go.”
I sit down next to him. “Micah,” I say. He looks up at me, and I flounder for the right words to say. “You can’t,” I blurt out.
He seems to relax, and even smiles, if just a tiny bit. “I have to go home eventually, Hope.”
“I just don’t want you to leave thinking you shouldn’t be with me,” I explain. “Because you should.”
His gaze is searching, unwavering. He says, “I know.”
I don’t know why the two words have the effect of making me feel so relieved, but they do. “Okay,” I say smiling. “So maybe to keep the heat off, we should keep a low profile at school.”
He raises an eyebrow. “What does that mean?”
“I mean, don’t act like my boyfriend at school,” I say simply. “Don’t sit next to me in homeroom. Don’t talk to me if you see me in the hallway. I’ll get rides from Sylvia. Just so Halverson leaves you alone.”
“All right,” he says after a moment. “And outside of school?”
I lean over and kiss him lightly on the lips. “Outside of school, you can be my boyfriend all you want.”
He smiles and reaches for me. He puts his hand against my cheek.
“You’re mine?” Although he says it as a question, his certainty of the answer underlies the words.
I usually find it completely and utterly nauseating when other people use possessive expressions like this. But when Micah says his version of these words to me, I think I finally understand it. It’s not that he’s saying he wants to be possessive of me, but that he wants to be able to count on me. And I’m totally okay with that.
I nod by way of answer, and my heart skips a beat as I say, “And you’re mine?” I definitely express it as more of an actual question.
“Only ever yours,” he says, and my heart more than compensates for skipping a beat by fluttering uncontrollably.

Excerpt 2:

It’s an interesting photograph, the one by Draper. It’s of the crowd at a city train station like the one on Exchange Street. The subjects of the photograph are a man and a woman on opposite ends of the frame. They’re highlighted, but by being transformed to black and white while everything else in the photograph is in true color. There’s almost a tragic feel to it, like they’re forever imprisoned apart from each other in monochrome.
I take a step back to look at the photograph from a distance. But the other person in the gallery must have been standing right behind me, and I crash into him. I step forward and spin around.
He’s wearing all black – a black suit with simple, elegant lines, a black dress shirt, black shoes. He has dark eyes, a dark complexion, jet-black hair. I wonder if he dyed it to match his suit.
His eyes are fixed on me. And this is exactly where I stop noticing anything about the rest of his face because there’s an eerie white fire blazing in his pupils. I’ve never seen anything like it. I don’t think it’s an aura – auras always manifest themselves to me as distinct colors, never white. No, not an aura. Something completely different. I realize that I’m in a sort of trance, waiting for the visions to come. But they don’t.
I’m usually pretty good at it, at pretending I’m like everyone else. I hardly ever let the things I see get to me. Except for right now.
“Are you all right?”
His voice breaks through to my consciousness. Given the strangeness of his eyes, I guess I also expected his voice to be different. Resonant or echoing, maybe, but it isn’t. He blinks and the white evaporates into nothingness, leaving just the perfect blackness of his pupils. I come back to myself immediately, my trance broken.
“Are you all right?” He says it in exactly the same tone as before. He doesn’t sound annoyed, even though annoyance would have been perfectly justified. I’ve just been standing here staring at him like he just sprouted a third eye.
“Yeah, sorry. I just thought you were someone I knew,” I say, mentally congratulating myself for the save. Better late than never.
Fiery Eyes smiles at me, and I notice for the first time that he’s kind of a looker. He’s not at all my type with the well-dressed vampire thing he’s got going on, but then again, I don’t consider anyone to be my type. The suit makes me think he must be in his twenties, but he really doesn’t look that much older than me.
His eyes, exactly the shade of hot cocoa, are looking at me curiously. “I would have remembered if we had met before,” he says. His voice has a certain kind of charisma to it now, and I pick up the slightest hint of an accent, one that I can’t quite place.
“Do you want to know the story behind Fate?” he says suddenly.
“Huh?” I immediately wish I hadn’t said anything. I have no idea what he’s talking about, but that doesn’t mean I have to sound so... inarticulate.
“Fate,” he repeats with an indulgent smile. “The title of the piece you were examining so closely.”
I know the placard doesn’t show the title for the photograph, but I glance over my shoulder anyway. Nope, just the name of the artist.
“Is it yours?” I ask.
“Oh, no,” he says. “But I know its story.”
“Okay,” I say gamely. Maybe he read about it somewhere. Maybe he made up the name himself. Either way, I’m too curious not to ask. “So what’s the story behind ‘Fate’?”
“It’s about finally meeting someone. And never meeting someone.”
I don’t want to sound inarticulate again, so I don’t respond right away. But I think I get it. “Not for just the black and white couple in the photograph, but you mean in a bigger sense? Like whether we meet certain people through chance encounters?”
He shakes his head. “Like whether we meet them because of Fate.”
“Semantics,” I argue. “It basically winds up being the same thing in the end, doesn’t it?”
“Without Fate, there can be no end nor any beginning.” He says it simply, and he sounds just like a fortune cookie.

About the author:

Helen Boswell is originally from upstate New York. She obtained her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University at Buffalo and currently teaches biology at Southern Utah University. Helen enjoys playing with her two little boys, camping, gardening, eating large bowls of ice cream after the kids go to bed, and hanging out on the couch with her husband to watch Breaking Bad, Louis CK, and Wilfred -- and of course, writing. She is the author of the YA urban fantasy MYTHOLOGY. She is also the editor of other novels, including David James' LIGHT OF THE MOON and THE WITCH'S CURSE.

Our Interview with Helen:

1). What inspired you to write this story?

Like Micah, I love to people-watch. I think one of the original ideas that inspired this story was thinking about the differences between what people see and what people really are. All three of my central characters fly in the face of stereotypes, especially my dark angel and my good demon. And all three struggle with what they are, perhaps in respect to what they think they are "supposed" to be.
Also, I'm a hopeless romantic and wanted to write a boy-meets-girl story.

2). Whose POV is easier to write, Hope or Micah?

MYTHOLOGY was written all in Hope's POV, so she's easier for me to write just because I'm already in her head. MYTHOLOGY: THE WICKED will alternate between Hope and Micah, and at first, Micah was difficult to write just because I needed to get a good feel for his voice. He's a little more reactive and a little less introspective than Hope. Now he's just as easy to write as Hope. :)

3). Are any of your characters based on people you know?
Robin is loosely based on one of my good friends from college. I let her know ahead of time that I was using her namesakes and basing the character of Robin on her. She was excited and would like to request that Charlize Theron play her in the movie.

4). Is there a certain message you are trying to portray with this series?

Probably the main message is that even though some of who we are is out of control (what Jonathan calls "Fate" and what Ms. Salazar calls "Nature"), we do have the power to make our own choices. I believe that we all need to play the hand that's given us but don't believe in stereotypes.

5). What character do you feel the closest to?
I think I naturally feel closest to Hope because I'm in her head most of the time. She's strong-willed and speaks her mind. I'm strong-willed but often don't speak my mind (I'm more like diplomatic Robin in that way), and I think some of Hope represents a little bit of my inner me.

6). How many books are you planning for this series?

I originally had in mind three, but will make that decision after I finish book three. Sometimes I surprise even myself when I get to the end of the story. ;)

7). If you could have any sixth sense, what would it be?
Hehe, that's a great question, and a tough one. If it had to be anything, I wish I could have the opposite power as Hope - I wish I could automatically get a flash/sense of the goodness inside everyone. :)

8). What are your top 3 favorite books?
Ooh, another tough one. I'd have to say Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake, Defy the Stars by Stephanie Parent, and Blood Oath by Christopher Farnsworth.

9). Did any of your life experiences, help you shape the story?
Well, thankfully I can't see people's worst visions, but the chapter called "My Own Worst Memory" was influenced by one of my own worst memories. We all have our own "Brendans" that we have to face, whether they are like the Brendan that I wrote or otherwise.

10). If we give you chocolate, can we get a snippet from The Wicked?

It would have to be a LOT of chocolate.... Just kidding. Here's a tiny teaser.... from Micah's POV :)

It’s quiet enough for me to pick up my name from someone sitting at one of the Sweet Home tables. It’s loud in here, but the rest of the conversation flows to me like they’re talking in my ear.

“Micah, prom king? No, that would never happen.”

“Why not? God, look at him.”

“Because it’s not just about looks. He’s dating a nobody. As in, nobody wants her as prom queen.”

“Yeah, but you don’t vote for couples, you vote for...”

Hope. They’re talking about Hope. The darkness churns inside me and spirals outwards. I try to tune them out. But everything is louder now, amplified. Including the screechy voices of those catty girls.

It would be so easy, to take something from them. Just for retribution.

11). What about if you could be any character in your book for one day, who would you pick and why?

I would be Jonathan because (1) I want to know how it feels to be immortal, (2) I would give snarky and appropriately sarcastic comments to people without feeling guilty about it, and (3) he has the coolest car, ever.

12). What advice can you give someone who wants to become an author?

Finish writing your first draft. Just getting to that point is huge - I can't tell you how many unfinished manuscripts I had before I wrote the first version of Mythology. After that, it became more of a do-able process - editing, sending it out for comments, rewriting, re-editing, and again. And then getting it out to readers. I'm not going to lie - the process as a whole is daunting. But if you can just finish that first draft, that's a huge step, and the rest will come.

13). What's it like to have so many fans? And what's the craziest thing a fan has done for you?

I'm not sure that having five fans counts as having "so many" ;)

Okay, so I might have a couple more than five. No one has done anything I would consider "crazy," but one of the nicest things a fan did for me was to make me a charm bracelet with special charms for Hope, Micah, and Jonathan. Other fans have sent me drawings of my characters, which is also amazingly sweet.

14). Team Micah? or Team Jonathan? and why?

If I had to pick a "team," it would be Team Micah, just because I think he and Hope are meant for each other in many ways. I personally love Jonathan, but there are specific reasons why he can never be with Hope. ;)

15). If you were ever offered the chance to make this series in to a tv show or a movie would you?

OMG, YES! When I write, I picture the scenes as scenes from a movie, and I've been told by many readers that they can see the scenes play out in their minds as they read. I would die if I could ever walk down a red carpet on the movie premiere. Preferably on the arm of Micah. Or Jonathan. Or both.

16). If you could write a book with another author, who would it be? and why?

Someone who can deal with my craziness. Haha. No, seriously, I do have some top secret plans to write something collaboratively with Elise Valente, author of Vendetta of the Amaranthine series. ;)

Thank you again, for letting us interview you Helen!!!

Thank you so much! It was fun!
